All you Mommy's, Help a future Mommy out

Before all the fun shopping for baby begins, I want to know from you with experience what to do. I am a big believer in the fact that for certain things you don't want to skimp on price, it's better to go for quality. I also know there are somethings that you can definitely be frugal with and it's better that way. That brings me to my dilemma, I know nothing about this whole "baby world". So I'm asking for your advice, where do you feel that you made good purchases and would recommend them. On the other hand where do you feel that you may have made a first time mommy mistake? Help me out :) On anything, bottles, diapers, strollers, cribs, clothing, toys, etc. Where should I splurge and where do I make the penny scream? I would really appreciate your help as always. Thanks Love you guys!

Hmmm...
-We found that BabiesRUs is a great place to start getting educated about products. So if you're clueless about brands or anything--good place to start.
-A LOT of teeny tiny (0-3 months) clothes aren't really necessary because you're not really taking them out anywhere for a long while and you really want easy access to their diaper at all times. The little chich-sak type sleepers are the best! Get a few cute tiny things, but spend the clothes money on cute stuff when you're out and showing them off! Shopping end of season sales for the next year is a great way to save some money. Yeah, it's last year's collection, but who cares?
-Don't get a heavy car seat!!!!! We got the Graco MetroLite travel system and I love it. Babies get heavy after a while and you don't need a huge heavy seat.
-You don't need lots of toys for newborn. They can't really hold anything or shake a rattle or anything for a while. Things like mobiles and things that make noise they can look at seemed to be best. Lincoln didn't start really playing with toys til closer to 5-6 months.
-Good luck and I'm sure your other mommy friends will have more tips!

Favorite Diapers-Costco or Pampers

Favorite Stroller (I've had about 10 from Kmart to Maclaren)-Chicco (but you'll need somthing sturdier in the beginning.)

Favorite formula (if you use it)-Costco brand

Favorite baby accessories- DEFINATELY BABY BINTZ!

Favorite Diaper Rash Ointment-Stick with Desitin

Invest in a good swing-They are priceless!

Diddo to what laurel said about the baby clothes!

Once you find out what you are having you'll have to come over and shop. I have so much stuff that isn't on my website!
Congrats!

Maclaren stroller- more expensive but when you have more than one child, it gets used a ton and my friends love them. I didn't get one and can't bring myself to get it at the end of having babies. Get a good crib, sturdy, your hubby will put it up and take in down with each child. People will give you tons of tiny baby clothes, try to get 6 months and older when you buy. Definitely try carrying around the car seat in the store, I got mine cause I wanted black (not navy blue cause they all were navy blue) It was the heaviest car seat ever and I just got rid of it after 3 kids in it. And of course the blankets/burp clothes my mom makes. She'll give you tons and they are the best. She can get funny with fabric so you should pick out some fabric you like. Wow I can really go on and on.

-I would definately get a nice crib. You can use it over and over again and you child will rough it up plenty.
-I'm not so sure about a stroller. All I would say is don't get one of the travel system ones because they are extremely heavy and really bulky. We borrowed Heathers until she could sit in an umbrella stroller.
-We were looking for a good deal on formula (since you have to buy so much of it.) It depends on what your baby will take but we used the wal-mart brand Parent's choice. It's half the price as Enfimil and EXACTLY the same. We compared labels and they were identical. Costco is just as cheap, but it seems to be really foamy. The only formula we found that isn't full of bubbles is the Parent's choice.
-We use Huggies diapers from costco. I think they have gone up in price but they are still a little cheaper than anywhere else.
-Babies R Us is a good place to get odds and ends but their clothes are so pricey as well as everything else. I usually buy clothes and shoes at target. They are super cute and the best deal. Anyway, if you need advice on other things, let me know, I'll be glad to help. :)

If you use formula don't buy Enfamil. It's soooo expensive! The generic from Costco is just as good.

I agree with Carlie about the swing. They are wonderful.

My favorite bottles have been Avent and Dr. Browns (they help with Colic).

I have a Chicco stroller and I've liked it but the fabric in the car seat is really harsh on baby's skin. Jack always has to wear long sleeves or he gets a really bad rash. I'd go with Graco if I didi it again.

Babies really don't need as much "stuff" as we think they do.

After I had Jack I felt so out of control and I was scared to go anywhere with him. I read a book called, On Becoming Baby Wise. I hated the method at first but now I swear by it. It's basically a schedule to put your baby on which is supposed to help your babies sleep patterns and get your baby sleeping through the night sooner. Jack began sleeping through the night at 7 weeks. The added bonus is you know when your baby will be eating and when they will be sleeping so it's easier to make plans. It's not for everyone but something to remember if you start feeling overwhelmed.

Good Luck Christin!
